Kyle Danish Examines the Trump Administration's Environmental Rollbacks

September 27, 2019

Kyle Danish and Sarah Ladislaw, Senior Vice President at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), have published a CSIS Commentary: “Why the Trump Administration’s Environmental Rollback is Increasingly Seeing Pushback” (September 24, 2019).

The Commentary analyzes the Trump Administration’s rulemakings to roll back greenhouse gas regulations promulgated under the Clean Air Act, and discusses the diverging responses to those rollbacks by industry. Danish and Ladislaw explain how the rollbacks do more than merely return to a pre-Obama baseline; they also are aimed at neutralizing the ability of future administrations to use the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. They also point out that there is increasing pushback by companies that have the ability to switch to lower-carbon operations and that believe that more aggressive climate policy is inevitable regardless of near-term regulatory actions.
